Every Spring and every fall the Cowboys of Wild West Mustang Ranch get itchin to head on out to Gods country and ride around the Old Outlaws playground at The Robber's Roost. It's just too hot to be riding around in the heat of the summer and the Desert Winters are way too dangerous to get caught out in.

As you can see everyone enjoys coming to The Roost. Mom's, Dads, Kids, in laws and Outlaws. There's something for everyone. Riding, Hiking, Driving tours, We even had a local artist Kami Taylor come out and paint a desert landscape right here in camp.

No matter how many times we see the Wild Burro's out here at the Roost it never gets old. Watching them is quite entertaining and if your lucky enough to see the babys they are darn cute. They look like a bunch of Giant rabbits.

That winter Place turned up in Emery County as Cassidy's companion. A 14 inch swell, a long tree, and a high cantle, it's a working cattleman's saddle. Butch Cassidy had a favorite saddle, and it is said, he cared little for those he found in Bolivia. The tree from his favorite saddle to this day is called "The Butch Cassidy" These guys lived in the saddle, and believe you me they KNEW what did and did-not work. These outlaws pulled off some of the most famous rides in history.
His health has been getting worse since the accident a few years ago at the Fremont, Utah saw mill. A log was set loose on the saw table prior to Silas being ready for it...the log crashed into Silas mid section breaking his back.
From that day on, he relied totally on his wife Luzernia for his care. The Morrell Family loaded the buck board wagon and left Fremont Utah, headed to old mexico. A major twist of fate was about to come upon Luzernia....This is how she meet and eventually married Bill Long aka The Sundance Kid.
While in route to, what the family was expecting to be a new life in old Mexico a small detail had to be handled. Ernest Morrell was born along side the buck board wagon. Can you imagine being the mother of 4 children, caregiver to your husband, traveling across country in a wagon and then on top of all that being pregnant!!
Luzernia was traveling with her brother and brother in law, good thing cause she was bout to give birth to young Ernest. The men found a suitable place to turn the wagon on its side, there among the sage brush, cactus, and junipers Ernest was born. No doctors, no sterile room, no nurses, just life as the Morrell family struggled for survival. The family continued on to Cortez Colorado, here they were out of money and in a desperate state. Silas health was getting worse, the mental situation had to be extreme. Luzernia decides that the family is going back to Fremont, they just cant make the long trip! Before turning back, they needed supplies. Clara at the age of 9 yrs old was sent into town to "find work" she was the only one in the family that was able to work. Young Clara secured a house keeping job at a residence in Cortez. One evening while the family was camped outside Cortez, a young cowboy stumbled into camp, stumbling because he had a bullet wound to his right knee.

The cowboy stated that some men were after him and he needed to hide. Luzernia took care of the cowboys wound, bandaged and stopped the bleeding, then hid him amongst her supplies at the wagon until it was clear the next morning. Clara left camp that morning to tend to her duties at the residence in Cortez, upon arrival she discovered a shocking site for any 9 yr old girl. She walked into the kitchen to discover that someone had tried to clean up blood. There were smears of blood across the kitchen floor and out the back door. She followed the blood trail to the back yard where she discovered two freshly dug graves, then she remembers the wounded cowboy that came into her families camp the night before, was he involved? Did he kill the two men that buried in the back yard? Is this his blood that is all over the kitchen? Who is this cowboy that hiding with my family? Yup, this is how Luzernia meet her future husband, Bill Long, aka The Sundance Kid! Bill traveled along with the Morrell family on their return to Wayne County as far as Moab. Luzernia, Silas and the kids made it back to their homestead in Fremont. Silas died just two years later due to the injuries he suffered at the saw mill.
Bill later worked at "Paradise Ranch"(shown above) bustin broncs for the cattle outfit. Paradise Ranch is a days ride north of Fremont, located along hi-way 72 just north of Hogan Pass. Stories tell that Bill would ride his horse all the way to Fremont every few weeks to get his "hair cut"...wonder who was cutting his hair??? I'm bettin Luzernia was pretty handy with a pair of scissors :) Bill and Luzernia were married shortly after Silas's death in 1893.
It was well known that The Sundance Kid had a gunshot wound to his right knee. During the forensic reports of Bill Longs remains, the right knee of Bill Long had a gunshot wound that matched the description of the the gunshot wound of The Sundance Kid. This along with the matching photos is part of the story of discovering The Sundance Kid.
As the story goes... Bill Long died in Duchesne, Utah by a gun shot to the head. The family never believed he would kill himself. At the time of his death Matt Warner had wrote a book and it was about to be released... Some people believed old Matt came to talk with Bill about the things that were going to come out in his new book and then Bill Long was dead. The family found Grandpa Long lying dead out back of the house they were so upset at the sight they took the rifle and threw it in the canal, the gun was never recovered. This is a photo of how the house looks today.
Local artist Kami Taylor has been involved with the filming of the Documentary, Discovering the Sundance Kid for 3 years now. She has found a connection with the Outlaws of the Wild West and has done many paintings along the way. She often says she is married to a modern day Outlaw, Her husband is West Taylor of Extreme Outlaw Rides and she lives on the Wild West Mustang Ranch full time in Fremont, Utah. Kami has adopted 2 Wild mustangs herself and finds great joy in painting the horses and the cowboys that have come and gone over the past few years.

Its the 2nd night out in the Roost for me and my gang (Saddle horse Cassidy, Pack horse Diesel, trusted dog Bullet). I am out here in the most remote region of southern Utah to do some filming for my Kickstarter Project. I have made it into the inner camp that the Outlaws used to hide out from the pursuing posse. I made my campfire right next to the remains of their campfire spot. Set up all my grub..well whats left of it after my pack mustang Diesel decided it was his duty to test every knot, string, strap, and buckle on my pack rig the day before. After a decent dinner of MRE "chunky chicken" I wondered over to my cowboy kitchen sandstone table top and made up a cup of instant coffee.
now the cowboy kitchen sandstone table top is not close enough to the camp fire to provide much light. I dumped some instant coffee in my cup, looked in to see how much made it in the cup..too dark to tell, so I added a bit more...After heating up my cup o joe on the fire I gently sipped what I wanted to be a relaxing cup of cowboy juice by the fire while gazing at the awesome display of stars one can only see from the bottom of Horseshoe canyon... no light pollution here!!

Once the cup got close enough to smell...I could tell right away I may have added a slight amount too much on the instant coffee, after a small sip...CONFIRMNED way too much coffee, now I like to say I am cowboy tough and serve it to me hot and black...not man enough to take another sip of this rocket fuel!! I left the cup close to the fire....thinking maybe in the morning I will feel a bit "tougher". I awoke in at first light, rolled out of my bedroll, noticed that the horses were still hobbled and within eyesight of camp (that feels good!!)

Thought I may take another chance at the coffee....Thats when I remember waking up somewhere in the night to sounds of my dog drinking, tongue lapping act....I looked at my coffee cup still sitting upright by the now burnt out fire...EMPTY! I glanced over at my dog...who has been circling around my campsite since I got up...she cant hold still......around my bedroll....around the campfire.....around my cowboy kitchen....out to the mustangs...back to camp...hahahahha Never would have thought the dog liked coffee, She does however "think she's a cowboy" Very entertaining having a Caffeinated Cowdog :)
I was ready for some awesome cowboy riding. My pack horse for this trip is Diesel, he is a 5 year old gelding from the Winemucca herd, I have had him here at the ranch for less than one year. I have never done any "packing" so this 3 day trip was to break me and Diesel in! Two days before I left the ranch I thought it would be wise to familiarize Diesel with the pack equipment I found out in the barn. He did great! A little spooky of the boxes, nothin he didn't figure out pretty quick. So I'm thinking "heck ya I love these Mustangs" let's go for a 3 day trip.

So it is the first morning, I slept in just a bit to compensate for the tossing of the night before out on the desert floor of Blue John spring. Feed Diesel his favorite breakfast, grass hay on the rocks, swung the sawbuck frame on, cinched it down, all is going great, I have Diesel hobbled so he will hold still as I work around him with the pack equipment. Now it's time for the boxes, I'm a bit nervous, could he really just be ok with one time? I take it slow, letting him check check out all the new equipment, ....boxes on all is well, I'm thinking "oh ya this Pakin stuff is great" I walk over to my bedroll, it's rolled up nice and tight in a canvas liner. As I swing it up to gently place it on top of the boxes, Diesel says...what the $&@$ is that!?!? He decides it's is much safer for him to remove all newly added equipment, spins on his hind end and off he goes, bucking, farting, and punching holes in every thing!! I must have been quite the site, standing there like a school kid holding my sleeping bag watching as my "packin Mustang" proceeds to scatter my stuff all over Blue John canyon.. All I could do was stand there and watch....thinking "wish I would have held on the the lead rope". Damage, busted sawbuck pack frame, scrambled all my eggs, and poked holes in 4 of my Mtn Dews! I'm no quitter, bagged the pack boxes, took the bare necessities of survival for a two day trip, stuffed it all inside my sleeping bag, rolled up and strapped it on to what was left of the busted up sawbuck frame..ridin at the Roost is never easy, always worth it :) ~Wild West
Many of the Cowboys came in days early and left late to enjoy the beauty of this land. West facilitated daily rides out to The old "Wild Bunch" Outlaw camp of 1897 and "The Spring". This is a picture of "Butch's round pen" as it stands today. We had Horse trainer and clinician Jimmy Smith of Horses Landing out of Wanship, Utah come and do a mini horse clinic in the actual round pen. It was a great trip with amazing food, new friends were made and the spirit of the Outlaws lived on. Some say those Outlaws were there that trip and having fun on the other side of the veil haunting all the horses, many were acting up and sever guys got thrown from their horses, thankfully no one was hurt.

The investigation began in 2007. Old family stories tied Long to the outlaw gang known as "The Wild Bunch." Who am I? It was as if his dead great grandfather was whispering directly to him from the grave. This set Jerry's heart on fire and the quest began.
